After a chilled week in Villiersdorp it was time to treat ourselves. Just over an hour out of Cape Town and on the way back to the city from Villiersdorp is the idyllic French town of Franschhoek.
When driving from Villiersdorp, the top of the valley opens out to the most spectacular views before dropping down into the town past La Petite Ferme (more about that later).
Park at the Huguenot Museum and pay the small ticket price to view the well kept colourful gardens. It is then an easy walk along the main street to browse the boutiques selling wooden home ware made from the local wine barrels, of course lots and lots of wine and some very luxurious jewellery stores.
Each building is a unique Cape Dutch style and the town itself is definitely a place to make an effort, especially if you are stopping for lunch - which you must!
If you have the time it is well worth staying for a few days to explore the wine estates and to eat at La Petite Ferme.
